As most of you know, that was one of the songs of old Hugh D. Ledbetter. And here's another one.
Ledbetter made up a song out of just what a man might have hollered when he was in the fields wanting his wife to bring him a glass of water.
I heard Ledbetter sing it with his niece, and they used to harmonize so pretty on it.
He'd be singing, bring me a little water, Sylvie, and she'd sing low down. She had a country alto voice.
Bring me a little water, Sylvie, bring me a little water now. Bring me a little water, Sylvie, every little once in a while.
You have to get that. And then the men all singing.
Let's hear all the girls. Bring me a little water, Sylvie. Just the girls.
Bring me a little water now. Bring me a little water, Sylvie, every little once in a while.
Now the verses, I'll give you them as we go along. It is, don't you see me coming, don't you see me now, and so on.
Bring me a little water, Sylvie. Oh, men, are you going to sing your part?
Bring me a little water, Sylvie, bring me a little water now. Bring me a little water, Sylvie, every little once in a while.
Oh, girls, they're going to drown you out unless you really sing out. Open up your mouths wide.
Here we go. One, a two.
Bring me a little water, Sylvie, bring me a little water now. Bring me a little water, Sylvie, every little once in a while.
Don't you see me coming, don't you see me coming, don't you see me now, don't you see me coming, every little once in a while.
Don't you hear me coming, don't you hear me coming, don't you hear me now, don't you hear me coming, every little once in a while.
Bring it in a bucket, Sylvie. Bring it in a bucket, Sylvie, bring it in a bucket now. Bring it in a bucket, Sylvie, every little once in a while.
Bring me a little water, Sylvie, bring me a little water now. Bring me a little water, Sylvie, every little once in a while.
Sing that last line, every little once in a while. One more time, every little once in a while. One more time now, every little once in a while.
